Types of Tree Fertilizer

Suburbs

They may not always tell you as easily as lawns do, but sometimes trees need fertilizer too.  There are times that the nutrients in the soil are not enough to give the tree all it needs to survive and to thrive.  In order to ensure that you are wisely investing in the right tree fertilizer, it is important to understand what types of fertilizer are available.

What Are Tree Fertilizers?

Fertilizers are made up of two types of components, macronutrients and micronutrients.  Macronutrients include elements like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, while micronutrients include things like Iron, Magnesium and Manganese.

Different fertilizers have different levels of each element, which is why it’s important to know exactly what your tree needs, and when. Too much nutrition can actually hurt your tree, or feed invasive plants and diseases. There are also several different types of fertilizer, including:

  • Organic Fertilizer – Organic fertilizers are composed of only natural materials like animal manure and plants.  This type of fertilizer is known as a slow release fertilizer, which means that the nutrients slowly release over time and not all at once.  Organic fertilizers tend to be more expensive, they can be more difficult to find, and they may not feed your tree very quickly, but they are appropriate in a variety of settings.
  • Inorganic Fertilizer – Inorganic fertilizers are nitrogen based and created in a less organic environment. Inorganic fertilizers tend to be less expensive than organic fertilizers and tend to work quickly, which makes them more popular than organic fertilizers. They usually have a specific ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as well, unlike organic fertilizers which varies depending on the environment. Although not organic, they are still an effective and safe option for most trees.
