How to Build a Fire Pit

When you put a lot of time and money into your lawn, it only makes sense that you should get the most out of it all year ‘round. A favorite way to enjoy your backyard is to install a fire pit. It may sound intimidating to some, but it’s an easy “Do It Yourself” project that you can enjoy all year.

**Before building a fire pit, be sure to check the building codes in your area and get the proper specs and regulations. Always choose a spot that is a safe distance away from your house and away from any low-hanging trees or other structures. Take precautions when digging holes, so you don’t hit utility lines. **

What You’ll Need:

• Level
• Tape measure
• Tamper
• Cast concrete wall stones
• Cap stones
• Sand
• Shovel

Let’s Get Started:

1. Arrange the wall stones in the approximate size and shape (usually a circle or square) you want your fire pit to be. Generally, fire pits should be about 36 to 44 inches in diameter.
2. Move the stones and dig a hole as wide as the outside of the shape and 12 inches deep.
3. Pour a layer of sand into the bottom of the hole and tamp until level.
4. Begin to lay your stones around the perimeter of the hole. Stagger the joints between the blocks to strengthen the wall and continue stacking until the wall 12 to 24 inches above the surrounding ground.
5. Pour a 4 inch layer of sand into the ring of sand.
6. Put the capstones on to complete the wall.

(Optional) Purchase a fire pit screen cover. These are a great way to keep hot debris from popping out of your fire pit!
