Are Grass Clippings Good for Your Lawn?

As you mow your lawn, you get a blanket of grass clippings. Some people take the time to rake them up and find ways to recycle them and others don’t mind the extra layer on their lawn. Here’s the good news: you can leave the grass clippings right where they are! Your lawn will thank you.

Why Grass Clippings Are Good for Your Lawn

Grass clippings are a natural fertilizer. Afterall, they do contain all the essential nutrients your grass needs. As they decompose, they release water and nutrients into your lawn’s soil, helping your grass grow greener and thicker.

How to Make the Most of Your Grass Clippings

Use the right equipment: You can use a push mower and a mulching mower when utilizing grass clippings as a lawn fertilizer. If you’re going to use an electric or gas mower, make sure you choose one that’s powerful enough to cut your grass evenly.

Choose the right cutting length: Your clippings should be about 1/3 the height of your grass. This keeps the clippings long enough to be effective while keeping your grass healthy.

Make sure your blade is sharp: A sharp blade ensures even mowing and therefore more effective clipping distribution.

Switch mowing direction: Instead of mowing in a single direction, switch back and forth. This helps distribute clippings more evenly.

A Word of Caution

Too much shade is a bad thing for your lawn. During the peak of the growing season, you may accumulate a large number of clippings that can prevent the sun from reaching your grass. Stay mindful as you mow.
