How to Maintain Your Lawn in Extreme Heat

Too Much Sun

Before we know it, the weather will cool, the leaves will begin to change colors, and your mowing schedule will clear up. We’re not quite there yet. As we’re dealing with the hottest temperatures of the year, your lawn might be feeling the effects. Ares of your lawn might become discolored, and you might even find some spots die by altogether. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to prevent issues. Learn how you can maintain your lawn in extreme heat.

How to Maintain Your Lawn in Extreme Heat

  1. Water Well. During the hot summers we experience in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey, you want the moisture level of your grass to be in the range of 8″ to 10″. You can measure this by using a probe to penetrate the soil to the desired depth. If the ground isn’t easily penetrated, it is probably a sign that your soil needs more moisture. You can expect to need to give your lawn thorough soaking two to three times per week, depending on the rain in the forecast. This is more effective than light watering daily.
  2. Mow Properly. Chopping off more than 1/3 of the length of your grass blades prohibits proper grass growth. If you mow too high, you can leave your lawn with scraggly, unattractive turf, so be sure to cut at least 2-1/2″ when you mow. While you might be tempted to cut it shorter than necessary to put more time between your next mow, the scorching sun directly on the soil can dry it out more quickly.
