How You Can Help Your Lawn During Drought & Heat Stress
Your active participation is crucial in managing drought stress. Here are some practical tips that will make a difference:
Watering/Irrigation Tips:
- Water deeply and infrequently: Early morning watering (5:00 to 9:00 AM) is ideal, ensuring your grass gets what it needs while minimizing evaporation.
- Infrequent Watering: If you cannot water regularly, even watering once every four weeks with about ½ inch of water can help keep the plant crowns alive, aiding survival without necessarily greening up the lawn.
Mowing Tips:
- Adjust your mower to 3-4 inches high. This encourages a deeper, denser root system, retains moisture, keeps soil cooler, and defends against weeds.
- Consider skipping or delaying mowing if your lawn is particularly stressed.
- Mowing too short can damage stressed grass, making it harder for it to recover.
Look For Signs of Lawn Disease:
Symptoms of lawn disease become apparent under the right environmental conditions.
We tend to see several common lawn diseases during extended periods of hot, humid weather in combination with periods of rain.

In addition following the below cultural practices can help minimize disease pressure:
- Do not irrigate during the evening - this helps reduce foliar wetness, which reduces disease activity.
- Avoid drought stress as much as possible
- Pick-up clippings if possible
- Mow at a height 3-4” and keep mower blades sharp
- Aerify in the fall to reduce compaction and improve soil health
