How to Mow Your Lawn so it Looks Like a Baseball Field

Mowing lawn

Who doesn’t want their lawn to resemble the perfectly manicured blades of a baseball diamond? Perfectly patterned, vibrantly green, and… incredibly intimidating, right? Wrong. It turns out, you don’t have to be a professional groundskeeper to have a field of dreams in your own backyard. Read on to learn how to mow your lawn like a baseball field.

Here’s the secret: the lines that alternate directions bend the grass in different directions, meaning they reflect the light differently to create the beautiful contrast you’ve come to know and love. The blades bent in a direction facing you appear darker in color that the blades leaning away from you.

  1. Mow high: longer blades mean a better, more pronounced bend. This increases the contrasting effect between the alternating stripes. Set your mower to cut between 2-1/2″ to 3-1/2″ high, but never more than 1/3 of your grass blades.
  2. Perimeter first: mow around the outside edges of the lawn first before filling in the rest of your lawn with stripes.
  3. Line drive: mow in as straight a line as you can across the lawn lengthwise. At the end of the lawn, turn and mow in the opposite direction to create an alternating stripe. Continue mowing in alternating stripes until you’ve covered the entire lawn.
  4. Checkmate: create a checkerboard effect by recreating a perpendicular striping effect using the same methods outlined in step 3.

Avoid striking out: Repeating the same pattern and bending the grass in the same directions week after week puts a lot of stress on it. Change up your mowing pattern every third week to promote a healthy lawn.
