Early Spring Application

Early spring is the best time to take care of many types of weeds that occur in a homeowner’s lawn. In fact, there are some that you can wipe out before they get a chance to start, others you can catch at the peak of their growth.

Round One

Killing the right weeds at the beginning can spare you a lot of trouble throughout the entire season.

What We Do – This early spring application contained a product that is especially important to your lawn; your first full rate of crabgrass pre-emergent. This material creates an invisible barrier a half inch under your soil line. It is there to stop crabgrass seeds from germinating and will give you over 90% control verses an untreated lawn.

What to Expect – The fertilizer that was put down will help improve the color and density of the lawn. Over the winter months your grass had gone into a dormant state, giving it a brownish or gray color as it was not taking in any new nutrients. Think of the fertilizer as food for your lawn! Your lawn should respond generally within 10-14 days and lasts 4-6 weeks. As for weeds, as soon as temperatures give us optimal conditions, we will begin to use our broadleaf weed control. Depending on the timing and conditions of your first treatment you may have already received a blanket spray. Your technician will note this on your invoice. While most weeds will take 72 hours to begin curling and die off, some may take up to 2 weeks. Weeds to take note of at this time of year include but are not limited to: crabgrass, chickweed, and assorted annuals such as buttercup, spurge, clover, and henbit.

How to Benefit the Most – This treatment works best when watered in. Normal spring conditions should provide enough rain to efficiently breakdown the fertilizer and pre-emergent, but if we lack proper rainfall watering is strongly recommended. It is important to remember that your technician will be checking for weeds and any problems that are visible during each treatment. Be aware that these will be noted on your invoice that he leaves for you. They will provide as much information as possible to enhance the results on your lawn.

Early Spring Application Quick Tips:

  • make sure your mower blades are sharpened to ensure a clean cut on each and every blade of grass
  • mow at 3.5” to keep your lawn dense and healthy
  • never remove more than 1/3 of the blade of grass
  • use a higher mowing height on hills to prevent crabgrass from germinating
  • trimming edges around sidewalks and driveways down to the dirt will cause the pre-emergent barrier to break
