Preventing Crabgrass

Most of us are quite familiar with the not-so-beautiful specimen above. It’s one of your lawn’s greatest foes, Crabgrass. It was brought to the U.S. in 1849 as a crop that would potentially feed livestock but that fell through and we’ve been stuck with it ever since. Crabgrass loves sun and moisture and will take root almost anywhere. That brings us to the question of how to prevent this dastardly weed from overrunning our lawns. Applying a pre-emergent for crabgrass and maintaining a thick lawn are your best bets for keeping this weed under control. When it comes to pre-emergents, time is definitely of the essence.

Many people depend on the blowing of forsythia or lilacs to dictate when they need to put down a pre-emergent, but it really is best to go by what conditions are ideal for crabgrass germination. When the soil temperatures start to reach the 55-60 degree range for at least 4-5 days, germination will start to occur.
