Homemade Mosquito Repellent

homemade mosquito repellents

Few things ruin a summer night outside faster than mosquitoes feasting on you. While DEET sprays are effective, they’re not the right choice for everyone. Luckily, you can make your own homemade mosquito repellent with ingredients you probably already have at home!

Homemade Mosquito Repellent Options

Essential oils are a popular choice for homemade mosquito repellents because mosquitoes are sensitive to smells. Some essential oil options include:

  • Peppermint
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Lemon
  • Citronella
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Other strong-smelling essential oils

Option 1: Witch Hazel Base

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup witch hazel
  • 50 drops of essential oil
  • Spray bottle

To make this spray, mix together your witch hazel and essential oil of your choice. Pour the formula into a spray bottle and apply to your exposed areas, like arms and legs, before heading outside.

Option 2: Coconut Oil Base

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 20 drops of essential oil
  • Container

Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer that many people use in beauty routines. It has a strong, yet pleasing, scent that contributes to mosquitoes’ repulsion of this mix. Coconut oil has a low melting temperature, so to make this mix, you need to melt the oil and stir in your essential oil drops. Pour it into an empty container, and let it return back to room temperature to harden. Before you go outside, apply it like a lotion on your hands, arms, and legs.

Option 3: Vinegar Base

  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 50 drops of essential oil
  • Spray bottle

Just like the witch hazel option, mix together the vinegar and essential oils, then apply before heading outside. Vinegar has a strong scent, but the essential oils mask the smell so you don’t need to worry about smelling like vinegar all night.
