Dormant Seeding

Dormant Seeding

In the lawn care world, fall is considered the best time of year to seed for a successful, luscious lawn next year. It’s recommended you plant cool-season grass seed 45 days before the first estimated frost in your area. That’s because the temperature is still favorable for growth. However, you do have the opportunity to do something called dormant seeding that is a great option for preparing your lawn. This method of seeding your lawn ensures the seeds don’t have the opportunity to germinate until springtime.

Dormant Seeding

Do

  • Wait until the first frost so the seeds aren’t able to germinate and take root
  • Aerate first to address compaction and allow the seeds to settle deep in the ground
  • Overseed in patchy areas so your lawn is thick next year

Don’t

  • Don’t choose a random grass seed from the store. Be sure to select one that’s right for your area of the country and the shade level of your lawn. For yards in the northeast United States, we recommend tall fescue, ryegrass, bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and rough bluegrass.
  • Don’t skip raking or mulching first. While it can be tempting to leave the leaves, it’s important to have a clear lawn when dormant seeding so the seeds can make it into the soil.
