Green Lawn Fertilizing Visits Penn State for Annual Turf Field Day
August 24, 2012
Green Lawn Fertilizing joined our green industry friends at the PSU Field Day on August 9, 2012. This event was a great chance to see industry relevant practices to better manage our turf decisions and day-to-day operations. This year, the Pennsylvania State Turfgrass Program put on a phenomenal showcase of many turf management “how to” practices including:
- Disease control for greens, fairways, and lawns
- Weed control for golf turf and lawns
- Insect monitoring demo
- Fertilizer/nutrition research
- Acidification of tank mix safety demo
- Acidification of root zone mixes with sulfur
- Summer stress management products
- Environmental models for disease prediction
- Turfgrass variety evaluations
- Greens-type Poa annua research
- Compost soil amendment studies
- Plant growth regulator tests
- Tall fescue wear tolerance for athletic fields
- Bermudagrass demonstration
- Synthetic turf research/demo
- Fertilizer BMPs for home lawns
According to Tom Knopsnyder, Vice President of Operations at Green Lawn Fertilizing, Green Lawn Fertilizing attends these events so our customers know we are doing everything it takes to stay up to date with any turf related issues.
“The Reason we need to participate in training days such as the Penn State training day is so that our customers know we are doing everything we can to stay up to date with any issue with their lawn. The campus provides us with an experience unlike any other training because not only can you see the different products and how they work but you can talk directly to the professors who are doing the tests. They give us the advice on how to use products the correct way and how it will help each lawn. I believe by visiting this testing area we can see what is the best product and use this for the customer to make sure we are providing the best service with the best price and properly trained managers” (Tom Knopsnyder, VP of Operations).
The turfgrass program at Penn State began in 1929 with a push from outside the institution. Find out how Joseph Valentine, superintendent at Merion Golf Club, and several fellow superintendents shaped the program that exists today. The turfgrass program at Penn State has a proud tradition of serving the turfgrass industry, and boasts an impressive list of “firsts”.
